Holiday Lunch Campaign 2017 – Eduardo’s Story

For every $40 you donate this holiday season, you’ll give a child like Eduardo a home-cooked, healthy lunch for 1 month. With your help, we can raise $10,000 by December 31st to give all our children lunch in the new year.  >> Give now <<

Eduardo started at 3 Mariposas Montessori (3MM) this past summer. Unlike most three year olds we’ve known, he speaks very quietly and infrequently, spends most of his play time observing the others.

Eduardo lives in the barrio of La Cienega with his mother, father and four siblings.Eduardo on the playground

His family is Haitian and like many others that moved here from Haiti, the struggles they face from living a life of poverty are amplified because of their race.

The ongoing conflicts between the people of these two nations is hard felt by families like Eduardo’s who chose to come to this side of the island for the opportunity to have a better life.

Not enough room and not enough food

Eduardo and his family live in a sparsely furnished, one room, cinder block home that provides the most minimal of shelter from the heat and the rain.

Mom’s infrequent employment opportunities keeps her in a perpetual state of worry—not enough room to amply house them and never enough food to feed them.

Much of the children’s care is placed on the shoulders of her oldest daughter who is only thirteen.

Eduardo eating lunchMost days Eduardo comes to school with an empty tummy and, as evidenced by his voracious appetite, probably does not get much consistent nourishment after he leaves 3MM.

Eduardo’s mom heard of 3MM from others living in La Cienega and was happy when she learned we had space for her son. Her greatest wish is that all of her children receive an education that can lead them to a better life than she’s had.

We hope that with time, Eduardo and his family will discover the true haven that 3MM has become for so many families just like theirs.

We know it is just a matter of time before Eduardo starts blossoming as a student—he can’t help but do so in our carefully prepared environment and with our professional and loving staff.

We are certain, too, that his family will soon grow to trust and become another valuable part of the strong community we have built here. We KNOW we can do those things, we’ve witnessed it time and again.

Without your help, though, we are unable to afford the nutritious meals and snacks that will enable Eduardo to grow into that happy, confident, and bright child he should be. . . he deserves to be.

Lunchroom at lunchtime

For an active day of learning, growing minds need fuel.

3MM’s Free Lunch Program was started to provide at least one healthy meal every school day for children who otherwise might not eat at all. We began with white rice, pasta and bread. With the support of people like you we have switched to whole grain pasta, breads, and rice. Fruit and vegetables are a constant at every meal.

At 3MM, lunchtime is also a time for fun and learning. Our students work together to help prepare the meal, set the table and learn about healthy habits. They love the chance to sit around a table together. They tell stories, giggle, learn about each other and try new foods.

Please, help us provide the sustenance these children need to learn, to grow, to play, to laugh. Be the reason one less child goes to bed hungry tonight.

For the same amount of money you might spend on one restaurant dinner, you will provide the children of 3MM with the nutrition they need to learn and grow without the painful burden of an empty stomach.

Make your donation in honor of someone, and we will send them a holiday e-card to share the good news.
